Overview & Scope

The Constitutional Law Awareness is based on The Constitution of India 1950 which is the highest law of the land. It sets out the powers of the Government, the rights and freedoms of citizens and the framework in which all institutions operate. The Constitution is a directive document that brings justice, equality, liberty and dignity to the eyes of every citizen irrespective of their caste, religion, gender and background. Awareness of the principles of the constitution enables people to become aware of their legal identity and rights and responsibilities in a democratic state. Part III of the Indian Constitution ensures protection of the Fundamental rights, which is one of the most important aspect of Constitutional Law awareness. The citizens are given right to equality, right to freedom, right against exploitation, freedom of religion, cultural and educational rights and right to constitutional remedies to live with dignity and independence. Fundamental Duties under Article 51A remind the citizens of their duties towards responsible citizenship, national unity and respect for the democratic values.

Legal Importance & Relevance

This industry has a significant contribution to make in combating the misuse of power and accountability of government. The Constitution establishes a balance that prevents the Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary becoming arbitrary and supreme. The citizens have the right to come to the court any time the constitutional rights are infringed. Judicial Review, Writ Jurisdiction and Public Interest Litigation (PIL) can become important constitutional mechanisms which help to reinforce democracy and keep laws and government actions within the constitutional boundaries. With the advent of the fast changing technology, society and Politics, the role of Constitutional Law Awareness has gained tremendous significance in the present scenario. The constitutional values are closely related to issues of digital privacy, freedom of social media, freedom of data, environmental rights, education and freedom of expression. Citizens with a knowledge of the constitution are better able to defend themselves against discrimination, unjustifiable restrictions, and misuse of authority.
